Of the trillions of cells that comprise the human body, a group of cells that work together to perform a specific function comprise a tissue. The study of tissues falls under the perview of histology and we will begin—as most human anatomy courses do—by examining the four primary tissues:

• Epithelial
• Connective
• Muscle
• Nervous

Each primary tissue type is categorized by... function and organization of the cells that comprise each. In keeping with the theme of emergent properties, it is here that we point to the next level of organization above tissues: organs. As each organ is composed of a combination of the four primary tissue types, an understanding of the primary tissue types is vital.
