Connective tissue is the most widespread of the primary tissues. As such, it can be found throughout the body alongside any of the other primary tissue types.

The functions of connective tissues are as diverse as the locations where it is found. We consider the functions of each sub-type of connective tissue as we study them.

A hallmark of connective tissue that readily distinguishes it from epithelial tissue is that..., as opposed to epithelial tissue where cells are crowded together, connective tissue is composed mostly of matrix with neighboring cells spaced relatively far apart. Connective tissue is grouped into three main groups that can be further subdivided as follows:

• Bone
• Cartilage
• Fluid connective tissue
